Home Insurance Buildings cover

Buildings insurance covers the structure, fixtures and fittings of your home, for example, roof, walls, ceilings, floors, doors and windows, fitted kitchens, built-in cupboards and bathroom suites.

Most buildings insurance policies will also cover certain outdoor structures such as sheds, garages, gazebos and greenhouses.

Is buildings insurance compulsory?

If your property is mortgaged then your lender will require you to have adequate buildings insurance in place to help safeguard their investment in your home.

If you rent, buildings cover should be handled by your landlord.

Home Insurance Contents cover

Contents insurance is designed to cover your belongings. As a general rule, your contents are the things that could be taken with you if you decided to move house, for example, beds, furniture, TVs, clothes and jewellery.

Is contents insurance compulsory?

No. Unlike buildings insurance (which may be required by a lender before you can have a mortgage) contents insurance is completely optional, but a sensible idea.

Home Insurance Combined cover

A combined policy consists of both buildings and contents cover and is only suitable for people who own their homes.
