Developing our people

We look to attract, develop and retain the best people and to make sure they have solid career development opportunities. In order to achieve this, we invest heavily in training and development, across all levels of staff providing access to dedicated career development resources, including assessments, training, online resources and mentoring.

One key investment we make in our people is supporting and promoting the Ulster Bank Academy, which offers a wide range of technical education and personal effectiveness programmes, as well as bespoke leadership development for existing and prospective senior managers. New Accreditation Frameworks were launched in January in conjunction with the Institute of Banking.

Our People Standards and our Leadership Standards support Our Values and help us become a better bank for our customers and our people. There are opportunities for all staff to progress their careers by learning on the job, and through access to structured technical training and coaching. All employees also have access to Your Learning, web-based training and other online resources.

To maintain sector specific knowledge, all Ulster Bank employees undertake mandatory training through our online Group Policy Learning (GPL) platform. The training covers regulatory issues including anti-bribery and corruption, health and safety and fraud awareness training.

In our annual employee opinion survey, 75% of our employees agreed that they had received the training they needed to perform their role, 3% above the Global Financial Services norm.

In recognising the effectiveness of the Group’s GPL portal, it won the “best use of e-learning to ensure compliance with external regulations or internal policies” at the National e-learning Awards in 2011.
