What are my cash deposit limits?

What are my cash deposit limits?

The maximum amount in cash that you can pay into your account at a Post Office®,  Cash Access UK Cash Deposit Machines (CDMS) or Branch Cash and Deposit Machines (CDMS) is:

  • £3,000 per day.
  • £24,000 in a rolling 12 month period.

Cash that you deposit at our branches also counts towards Post Office® daily and annual limits.

We've written to current account customers recently advising of some changes to their account, including limits on payments. Read more about why we've introduced these limits in this leaflet (PDF, 100 KB).

These limits only apply to money you pay in cash. There are safe and secure ways of receiving money, such as transferring online or making electronic payments. See your options and limits.

Why is there a cash deposit limit?

Why is there a cash deposit limit?

Cash deposit limits help ensure we continue to keep you safe and secure. They also reduce financial crime.

These changes are for personal account holders and are similar to those made by other UK banks.

For information on limits for business banking customers, please have a look at the business cash hub.

What about withdrawals?

What about withdrawals?

The maximum amount of cash personal customers can withdraw from a branch is £3,000 per day.

Cash withdrawals are the least secure way of making payments given the number of other alternative options available through our Anytime Internet Banking and Mobile App services. Please consider more secure ways of completing your transaction and speak to a member of our team if you would like more information or support.

Our primary aim is to keep customers safe and secure, and our branches follow our processes carefully to achieve this.

This will include asking you questions about the purpose of your cash withdrawal, and in some cases, for supporting documentation such as an invoice. This helps us validate the withdrawal as genuine and protect you against fraud and scams.

Cash withdrawal requests over the counter can be supported during Monday to Friday within our opening hours.

When visiting one of our branches to make a cash withdrawal, you will need your Debit Card and PIN. You may also be asked for:

  • Secondary ID (such as Driving License or Passport)
  • Relevant paperwork to support your payment purpose, if this exists. For example, for property works please provide an invoice
  • To be prepared for our branch colleagues to ask further questions about your withdrawal request which can sometimes take up to 30 minutes - providing advance notification of the request does not mean it has been authorised
  • In some instances, we may choose to decline the cash withdrawal based on the information provided surrounding the transaction. This would only ever be in situations where we need to safeguard our customers.

How will my daily and annual cash deposit limits be affected if I pay in cash after a cut off time?

How will my daily and annual cash deposit limits be affected if I pay in cash after a cut off time?

Post Office® branches have various cut off times, so check with the Post Office® you wish to use to confirm what cut off times they have for cash deposits. If you're paying in cash before their cut off time, your remaining daily and annual limit will be reduced to reflect the deposit made. If you're paying in cash after their cut off time, your daily and annual limit may not reduce until the next working day, when your deposit is processed.

If you pay in cash at a Post Office® using a barcoded credit slip, it should be processed within 1–2 working days. Your daily and annual limits will only be reduced to reflect this deposit on the day the transaction is processed.
