Ulster Bank Northern Ireland Bankline Security – Rapport Decommissioning

From 31st January 2019, IBM Trusteer Rapport will no longer serve as an additional layer of security protection on Bankline.

Why is the Bank no longer offering Rapport?

Keeping our customers safe and secure is of paramount importance to us. We constantly update our systems and monitoring processes with layered security systems which help protect you, in addition to the security credentials you use for log in and payments.

However, the range of cyber threats affecting our customers has grown and evolved in recent years.

Rapport provides an additional layer of protection against the specific threat of financial malware, which aims to capture your PINs, passwords and other security credentials.

In recent years additional threats have emerged such as ransomware, which locks you out of your computer and demands payment from you in order to restore access. Meanwhile, data breaches have become more prominent, placing confidential data in to the public domain, thereby inflicting reputational damage and possible regulatory fines.

The bank is accordingly moving to a new solution that targets this broader range of threats.

What does this mean?

You need to decide whether to keep Rapport on your computer.

We currently sponsor our customers use of Rapport, which gives protection when using our websites. Once we end that sponsorship on 31st January 2019, our webpages will be removed from Rapport's enhanced protection list. The additional security that Rapport currently provides to Bankline and other RBS, NatWest and Ulster Bank websites will no longer be available. This means the Rapport icon in your browser will remain grey when you visit Ulster Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland or NatWest webpages in the future. Rapport will remain on your machine and will continue to offer protection from malware against those pages you have manually added and any other companies using IBM Trusteer Rapport. Unless you bank with another provider who offers Rapport, we suggest you uninstall the product, as per guidance below.

You can uninstall Rapport by following the appropriate link below.

I want to keep Rapport – what should I do?

You don’t need to do anything – Rapport will keep working. If you leave it in place, Rapport will remain on your machine and will continue to offer protection from malware against those pages you have manually added and any other companies using IBM Trusteer Rapport.

However, the additional security that Rapport currently provides to Bankline and other Ulster Bank, Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest websites will no longer be available.

I am multi-banked.  What should I do?

Rapport is still promoted by many other banks in the UK and around the world.

If you use online services from another bank, and that bank offers Rapport protection, then we recommend that you retain Rapport to ensure the security of these other services is maintained.

How best should I protect myself online?

Rapport has always functioned as an additional layer of protection for our customers.
